A meaty affair at Blue Grill Steakhouse

Nothing beats good old steak, especially when you are famished, which I was when I arrived at Blue Grill. IMG_6007

The restaurant is located in the Yas Island Rotana hotel (click here for Hotel review) , it is open from 6pm until 11:30pm. There are soft jazzy notes playing in the background as you enter, this place has an air of elegance and sophistication-not so common in steak houses.  The velvety navy chairs and blue lights complemented the dark wood tables perfectly.  There are also private booths, for a more private dinner. I liked the dim lighting that creates the perfect environment for an intimate evening.

What we ate We had the privilege of having Chef Damian come to our table to tell us about the amuse bouche he had prepared. It was a Scottish salmon tartar made with scallop’s cucumber, and naturally seasoned with lemon and citrus in a delicate phyllo pastry. It was a heavenly bite, refreshing fresh with a nice crispiness from the pastry. Perfect sized to whet my appetite.IMG_6206

For starters we had the Beef Charcuterie comprising various pieces of cured beef such as soppresata, carne fumada, cecina, pastrami with marinated artichokes and rocket topped with Parmesan. I loved the charred aftertaste in the beef. The Parmesan gave it a nice balanced slightly bitter nutty flavor which I enjoyed. Great Starter option.


We also ordered the Crispy Calamari. Hands down one of the best calamari I have had. It came with lemon dip and thick fries. The calamari was well cooked, the texture not very chewy or rubbery as calamari tends to be, but very succulent and tasty. The batter was thin light and delicious, I could easily gobble them all down. The fries we delicious, perfectly fried and not oozing oil.



For mains we ordered the Welsh Lamb from Dunbia Farms, which are 100% pasture fed. The lamb chops came on a bed of asparagus. The quality of the lamb was spectacular, perfectly cooked maintaining that juicy consistency even though they were well done. The seasoning was just right. It was simply mouthwatering. The portions were quite large and go a long way in satiating that hunger.


I like my meat well cooked, I ordered the Ribeye which was well done but maintain those juicy flavors. Cooking steak well done is very tricky as it’s easy to overcook and dry the meat out, but this was perfect melting in my mouth, just how I like it. My dish was accompanied by my healthy side option of buttered broccoli with almonds. I’d say altogether a perfectly healthy dish.IMG_6209

Various condiments accompanied the dishes such as, English mustard, Dijon mustard, Whole grain mustard, Garlic & parsley, Honey mustard and many more. I enjoyed the honey mustard best.IMG_6223

By the time dessert came, there was honestly no space left in my tummy, I was glad to see a light and very unique dessert presented to us. It looked like an ice sculpture of a flame, it was a passion fruit and citrus icy sorbet wrapped in dark chocolate balls. They were an interesting mix between tangy and sweet. I loved them, very refreshing but also very cold, so brace yourself.IMG_6238

Overall presentation was outstanding, colorful and enticing, the passion clearly shown on the plates.

Service-from the moment we walked in we were treated very warmly and service was attentive and friendly. We were offered pashminas when we told them we were cold. It’s the little things that count and that gesture went a long way for me.

We had the pleasure of meeting the resident chef Damian who hails from Germany, he has been at Blue Grill since February.  One can sense the great passion he has for good food, he is in the process of adding some of his interesting creations to the menu, and I can’t wait to taste them. Thank you Chef for an amazing culinary experience that took our taste buds on a delicious adventure. I have not had a steak that good in ages. My friends loved the entire experience.

Overall verdict. I give this place a big YAS!! Perfect for that quiet intimate evening or a business meeting. Great food. The prices are commensurate to most steak houses. Expect to pay about 700AED for two people. The service was spectacular and very friendly.
