I read the fantastic Zomato reviews and decided it apt to take my Kenyan friend to this authentic East African Restaurant. Find the restaurant was quit a mission despite it being quite centrally located on Zabeel Road in Karama, my GPS has a mind of its own you see.
I am actually fond of East African cuisine and so naturally very excited to get eating. They décor succeeds in creating a pseudo Africa vibe with various paintings, statues and knickknacks.
To order we had the following:
Spicy hot wings. They were well cooked and tasty however, there was a think layer of pepper/paprika that was overwhelming. The spices needs to be toned down a little.
The Mishkaki which is barbequed cubed meat in spices and spinach with paratha was what we ordered for mains. Honestly, having tasted authentic Swahili cuisine, the tastes here couldn’t be further from what I have had numerous times before. The Mishkaki tasted like Shish Tawook which was coated in too much spice that you could barely taste the flavor from the chicken.
The spinach and parathas were really good.
To drink we had passion and orange fruit juice which was delicious and refreshing.
The service was friendly but slow despite the restaurant not being that busy. The prices were reasonable. Would I go again? Maybe to give the other menu items a chance. Honestly my high expectations were not met by a long shot.
