I went to lunch with a few colleagues at the Oregano branch situated at the Galleries Building in Downtown, Jebel Ali. We got there at around 12 to find the place packed inside and outside. By 1pm there were literally no places available to sit. I guess this place is quite the lunch time favorite.
We were informed that our meals will take roughly 25 minutes, which was reasonable. In the meantime, we were given a warm bread basket with a variety of bread to keep our mouths occupied as our lunch was being prepared.
At this point we are tapping our meet with impatience and almost 40 minutes later our plates arrive. We were not amused. I appreciate that it was probably rush hour for the kitchen but 40 minutes, that was a rather long wait.
The order was as follows: Crostini Chicken with Linguine. The grilled chicken was tasty and juicy, however the crumby potato crust left a lot to be desired. I found it rather bland and dry. The sauce was really rich and creamy, quite decadent and heavy but I thoroughly enjoyed the indulgence. I must say I was rather sleepy after this lunch, not great for productivity at work lol.
My colleague ordered the Chicken Parmigiana, which is chicken which is lightly breaded topped with a tomato sauce and mozzarella. The chicken was far from lightly crumbed, in fact the breading was rather thick in comparison with the ratio of the thin chicken fillet. It was also too cheesy. I had a taste and was disappointed that a dish that looked so good didn’t match up in taste. My colleague was highly disappointed and so it goes without saying that he did not enjoy his meal.
My other colleague ordered the pan seared grouper fillet with a light cream sauce and a side of roast potatoes on a bed of asparagus. The fish was perfect in my books, perfectly cooked and tender. It tasted fresh. The potatoes sprinkled with parsley were firm and had a buttery taste-very tasty.
The service, although really slow, was friendly and again I appreciate it was due to a lack of waiters and a case of way too many patrons. I really think Oreganos should cater more waiters for peak periods. Please also use less breading as it can get overwhelming. Either that or make the chicken fillets bigger.
